Girls With Power

At Girls With Power, we aim to provide young women with the knowledge and confidence to become leaders both in their communities and online. On July 16, 2026, participants had the opportunity to hear from Megan McKay, PMP, who works for the City of Pearland, Texas, during a Cyber Safety and Social Media Awareness presentation. McKay shared practical strategies for staying safe online while building healthy online habits.

One of the key messages McKay emphasized was the importance of leading with empathy. Every interaction we have online contributes to our identity on the internet, and we get to decide how we want to be perceived. While everyone has the right to express their beliefs, she encouraged us to think carefully before posting and understand that our online actions can have lasting consequences.

McKay also shared simple but effective cybersecurity tips, including creating strong passwords, regularly reviewing privacy and security settings, deleting old or unused accounts, and being mindful of the personal information we share. As technology and artificial intelligence continue to grow, she reminded us that protecting our digital footprint is more important than ever.

When discussing social media, McKay encouraged us to avoid sharing our location in real time, use the block and report features when necessary, and take regular breaks from social media to protect our mental well-being. She reminded us that, like anything else, social media is healthiest when used in moderation.

McKay challenged us to become leaders who use technology with purpose and talked about careers in the tech field. Rather than seeking validation through likes or followers, she encouraged us to stand for what we believe in, advocate for what is right, and always support one another. She also emphasized the importance of having a trusted foundation of friends, family, and mentors to lean on if we ever experience cyberbullying or feel targeted online.

We are incredibly grateful to Megan McKay for sharing her expertise and empowering Girls With Power participants to become thoughtful digital citizens, confident leaders, and positive role models both online and offline.
